Philae Temple

The temple on the island of Philae was the last to be built in Egypt. This image was taken from the nearby island of Biggeh.

When the High Dam was built the whole complex was moved to the island of Agilkia which was blasted away until, when Lake Nasser had filled, it closely resembled the submerged Philae Island. The island had, in fact, been flooded for a significant part of the year since the original "British" dam had been built at the end of the nineteenth century about 40 years after Frith's visit.
